Valerie recently obtained a rare, four-carat diamond ring as an engagement present from her husband, Henry. She proudly wears it around town, telling everyone what a rich and generous husband she has. She tells everyone that the ring is insured for $100,000. David and Edward overhear Valerie at the bank, boasting about the ring. Having accrued approximately $100,000 in student loan debt between the two of them, David and Edward decide to steal the ring. David follows Valerie home from the bank. That night, Edward proceeds to the address provided by David and conducts surveillance. Two days later, Edward calls Valerie and tells her that her husband has been nominated for the Husband of the Year Award. In order to be considered for the prize, Valerie and Henry must appear, together, at a banquet on Friday night. Edward gives Valerie the address of an abandoned warehouse ten miles outside of town. Edward tells her that she should avoid wearing gaudy or ostentatious jewelry, as it could have a negative impact on the judging. On Friday night, Edward and David wait for Valerie to leave. Edward opens a window, climbs inside, and then lets David in through the back door. They quickly find and take the ring. As they begin to leave, they discover that they have tripped a silent alarm, and police are arriving. David drops the ring, races out the back door, and hides in the woods. Ten hours later, he proceeds home. Meanwhile, Edward jumps out a side window and races to the house next door, where Nancy is exiting her vehicle. Edward throws Nancy to the ground, jumps in the car, and speeds away. Unbeknownst to Edward, Nancy's four-year-old child is sleeping in the back seat of the car. Edward later abandons the car in a parking lot, without ever noticing the sleeping toddler. The child freezes to death in the night. At what point did David and Edward become guilty of conspiracy?

  1. When they decided to steal the ring.
  2. When Edward called Valerie to get her out of the house.
  3. When Edward and David entered the house.
  4. David and Edward are not guilty of conspiracy, because it merges into the completed crimes.
